Role and functioning of RRC
Red Ribbon Club (RRC) program is a voluntary on – campus intervention, aimed at
heightening the risk perception and preventing HIV among youth. RRCs have become
a powerful medium to reach out to young people. Spearheaded by the Tamil Nadu State
AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), this program is duly supported by the Department
of Higher Education and Department of Technical Education with the technical assistance
from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP). Atlanta demonstrating the
importance of inter-sector collaboration to address the issue of HIV/AIDS. RRCs
empower students in the age group of 17 – 25, by giving them information and life-skills
to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and changing the most active among into peer
educators.
In Tamil Nadu, this program has effectively been implemented from the year 2005
in all the Universities. Under the headship of the Vice- Chancellor of the University,
the program Coordinator of RRC in the University is implementing the activities
of this program in the affiliated colleges and this is being monitored by the Program
Coordinator and Nodal Officers from the university concerned and District Manager
as appointed by the Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society, Chennai. The main functionary
of this program at the college level is the Principal and RRC Program Officer who
is the faculty of the department and he is implementing this program by forming
one RRC unit containing 50 – 100 student volunteers.
Vision
To make India, an HIV/AIDS free country by creating awareness about the spread and
cause of HIV/AIDS among the student youth, non-student youth and public.
Objectives
To reduce new HIV infection among youth by raising their risk perception through
Life Skill Education and creating awareness on Sex, Sexuality and HIV/AIDS.

1. To induce among youth the spirit to help and support people living with HIV/AIDS
(PLWHA) thereby reducing stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.

2. To motivate youth and build their capacity as peer educators and change agents
by developing their skills on leadership, negotiation and team building.

3. To promote voluntary non- remunerated blood donation among youth.

RRC Regular Activities
1.Imparting 6 to 10 hour sessions on the curriculum “Celebrating Life”.

2.Peer education and leadership training.

3.Competitions (Debates, Quiz, Drawing and Painting).
|
4.Interactions with positive people.
|
5.Interaction with ICTC, ART, Blood Bank Medical Officers and Counselors and Transgender.
|
6. Peer leaders conventions.
|
7.Awareness campaigns (rallies,outreach activities) and exposure visit.
